The Price of Peace: Palestinian Property in Israel and the
Peace Process
The fate of property abandoned within Israel – agricultural
land, houses, moveable property, and etcetera – has figured in every serious
discussion on solving the Palestinian refugee problem, and will certainly be on
the agenda of final settlement/peace negotiations between Israel and
Palestine. How much property was abandoned? What monetary value can be
placed on it today and how are these likely very large sums of money to be
paid? The answers to these questions can be either an obstacle to peace – or
could contribute to the evolution of peaceful relations between the sides.
These issues should be confronted by experts in the field and debated
publicly. The “Price of Peace” symposium provided a forum for the Tel
Aviv-based Macro Institute think tank to present the results of a ten-year
research project on the subject, followed by discussion with leading experts in
the field.
